There are too many friends I would like to thank and wouldn't want to leave anyone out just know you all inspire me.
I wrote this album because I wanted to pay homage to New Jersey. Writing an album is hard, it's really hard to say "I have something to say, this is how I want it to be said, and this is why it needs to be said." I've spent so much of my life feeding into the idea that New Jersey is the armpit of the US, a laughing stock to the other 49 states. It wasn't until I watched the buildings change and the people leave that I realized this home I know and love won't always be here.
To my friends and family who are no longer here whether they left here or left us I'd like to dedicate this to you, thank you for helping me fall in love.
I fell in love as child on sick days while my grandparents would take me to the diner to drink tea and eat french dips. I fell in love while counting down the exits signs on the parkway while my parents drove us down the shore on Friday nights in the summer 151 to 98. I fell in love celebrating Christmas eve at my grandparents house in the woods of Hunterdon County, drinking wine listening to my grandfathers stories of immigration, living and working in Newark.
I fell in love as a teenager during late nights when my friends and I sat on the hill next to diner. I fell in love while we aimlessly drove on roads until we realized how connected everything was.I fell in love the first time. I fell in love while sneaking out of class to smoke cigarettes with my friends on the Jersey City pier. I fell in love while roaming the streets of Hoboken killing time before my train to go home came.
I fell in love as an adult at the dinner, watching my Floridian Girlfriend eat disco fries for the first time. I fell in love when my friends who moved away came to visit as we stepped into the vignettes of the spaces we once occupied. I fell in love when my friends from different states visited New Jersey for the first time and I got to show them the suburbs, the cities, the woods, and the shore, all in the same day. I fell in love when I found out the Newark bar I frequented was across the street from the one my grandfather had at my age. I fell in love while traveling the country realizing, how unique my home was but more importantly how unique everyone's home is.
Your home made you and it will always be yours so remember it for what it was, and enjoy it as it changes. Try to experience as much as you can while you're here and If someone lets you into their home, let them into yours. Jerry would be happy to hear me talk this much about houses, he knew I always wanted to be an architect! As always much love to you all! John Cozz
